DelMonico Books was established in 2008, with the support of Prestel Publishing, an imprint of Penguin Random House Verlagsgruppe. The imprint has published more than 490 titles, since the first list in fall 2009, and partnered with more than 65 museums. Starting in fall 2020, DelMonico Books are available globally through a publishing venture with Artbook/D.A.P.

The imprint was founded by Mary DelMonico. Previously, DelMonico was Director of Publications and New Media at the Whitney Museum of American Art, where she oversaw all print and digital publications and produced landmark titles such as Black Male: Representations of Masculinity in Contemporary American Art; The Art of Richard Diebenkorn; and The American Century volumes, 1900–1950 and 1950–2000. Before founding DelMonico Books, she maintained a consultancy firm, Offsite: Publications, Planning, Projects, which produced titles such as Dia:Beacon; Dan Flavin: A Retrospective; Masterworks of The Jewish Museum; Edward Steichen: In High Fashion, The Condé Nast Years, 1923–1937, and others. DelMonico has also served as a publishing and strategic-planning consultant for a number of museums and publishers, including the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Dia Art Foundation, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
